\n1) what role families\u2019 basic needs play in their overall quality of life
\nThe roles families\u2019 basic needs play are health, productivity, physical environment, emotional well-being, and family interactions. Families have [health] limited or no access to health care. Also families can be limited to leisure or recreational activities due to work [productivity]. Families\u2019 physical environment can be overcrowding due to the lack of health insurance or the number of children or adults living in the house. Families\u2019 emotional well-being can be in a high level of stress or low self-esteem. Last, families\u2019 interactions which are marital stress, and parenting issues.

\n (2) how systems and professionals within systems can build families\u2019 trust
\nYou can cultivate trusting partnerships with families and address their basis, unmet needs by (1) accessing social-emotional support, (2) accessing information, (3) accessing economic support, and (4) accessing support to address violence or neglect in the home. Social support refers to a source of comfort found within group and individual relationships. Emotional support refers to caring, encouraging, and understanding found within group and individual relationships. Social and emotional supports reduce families\u2019 stress and improve emotional well-being. Increased access to these supports often leads to greater satisfaction with parenting and increased positive interactions with children. Another ways to built families trust are by showing respect [honor cultural diversity], communication [provide and coordinate information], equality [foster empowerment], and advocacy [keep your conscience primed].","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"29362281","dateCreated":"1288498166","smartDate":"Oct 30, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"ucf2011","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ucf2011","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/eex2758.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/29362281"},"dateDigested":1532174585,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Basic Needs","description":"1. \nWhen students do not have their basic needs met, it is hard to concentrate and focus on school. Hunger can make it hard to concentrate in class. If you can't sleep at night because you are homeless, are living in an overcrowded house, or even in a car, it is hard to stay awake. If a student lives in poverty, it is hard to think about the future because they are worried about today, what will happen tonight, if they will get anything to eat or have a place to sleep. It is harder for them to think about going to college and what will happen after high school. Some students will miss a lot of school because they have to work to help pay bills. Many children who are the oldest in their family will have the responsibility of getting all the younger siblings ready for school. Individuals might be sick more often. Studies have shown that domestic violence increases when individuals live in poverty (or are not having their basic needs met). In addition, students may move numerous times within a year because they lose their place to live. Students may also not complete their homework because they have a lot of chores to do or the care of younger siblings. These individuals may come from families who have parents who work one or more jobs, but are still struggling to pay the bills and care for their children.

\n2. How do systems and professionals within systems can build families' trust?
\n
\nIn schools, I think one way is that teachers make the effort to show warmth toward students when they come into the door and great them by name. I think it comes from trying to understand where the family is at and trying not to judge them. I think when they are approached in a nonjudgmental way that they can sense that you really care. I think by doing programs like one local elementary school near me does which is sending home a backpack full of groceries to families who are in need every weekend. And every weekend, the student brings back the empty backpack. Appearantly, it was observed that many students were extremely hungry when they came to school on Monday morning so some people did some thinking and came up with this idea to try to help the families who were struggling. I also think professionals can build trust by offering a non-threatening environment in which the parent can talk and\/or in discussion offer information about places the family can recieve support. I think the majority of it revolves around relationship and how the family relates to the professionals.

I have volunteered in title one schools and I love it. I believe that every teacher should teach to the best of their ability, but I definately advocate that children must have their basic needs met before they can perform at their highest level. And I sometimes think that there are misconceptions out there about people who live in poverty. I have heard comments refering to the fact that the parent doesn't come to parent-teacher conferences or the like because they just don't want to. Now, I can't speak for the person the accusation was made for, but I know from my own experience in life that often times there have been things that I would like to have participated in for my own kids, but I just did not have time because of working two jobs and going to school 3\/4 to full time. I hate to say it outloud, but I fall in the category between poverty and middle class, often referred to as "working poor". Sometimes communication can be delayed or non-existant between parents and children depending on the situation. If the parent works two jobs and gets home after the child is asleep, that can cause a lot of the reason that communication does not occur. There are times that there are other reasons that communication does not happen as well. I also think you are right in trying to understand the family and their unique situation first. Some cultures do not believe in reaching to the government for help. Some families believe in helping one another, while other families have no trouble turning their back on each other. I think knowing the family and having a relationship with the family would probably help the professional determine how and what to do to support them and guide them to the help they need.","dateCreated":"1288499183","smartDate":"Oct 30, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"ucf2011","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ucf2011","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"29365349","body":"I also addedc the importance of shelter and added to the importance of communication to gain trust between families and professionals.","dateCreated":"1288526989","smartDate":"Oct 31, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"autumnfay","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/autumnfay","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
