Module 10 Assignment * Melanie Wheeler
1. What role do families' basic needs play in their overall quality of life?
I feel this is a hard question to answer as each family's needs are going to be different based upon the needs of the individuals who make up the family. Basic needs are food, shelter, and clothing. Yet if there is a parent or child who is sick, they are going to have other basic needs as well. A parent's job and income are ultimately going to have direct influence over how basic needs are met. Once these needs are met, if there is extra money, then entertainment should be an option. Yet some families cannot even meet the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing, and life is going to be more stressful. It is our job as educators to get to know the families we are working with and get to know their needs so that we can provide them with the resources they may need.

2. How can systems and professionals within systems build families' trust?
It is important for professionals working with families to build the trust of the family. This needs to be done from the beginning by being certain that families feel comfortable talking to you and know that what they share with you is confidential. Tell families a little bit about yourself and get to know them as well. Talk about what you want to accomplish and find out what their wants are as well. Come up with strategies for working together to accomplish goals that should be set together.

Here is a great website I found with articles for how to work with families in a number of different situations:

Melanie's Response to Colene:
Great ideas. You looked at the question completely how it would involve a child's school day. I did not even look at it in this way, yet something we as teachers need to focus on!
Melanie's Response to Lauren:
Great answer to question two. Short and to the point. And exactly true.

Module 10.2 Assignment - Colene Tessier

(1) 1. The basic needs of a family can affect their quality of life by dictating their level of dependence on the school system. If a family is living paycheck to paycheck they may need free or reduce lunches from the schools so the children are guaranteed 2 solid meals a day. If a child is disabled, they may need the services of the school to ensure they child gets the proper education they deserve.

(2) 2. Systems and professionals can build families trust by starting with open communication. Parents need to feel that professionals will keep them informed on what’s going on in their child’s educational plans. Professionals need to make parents feel they can contact them at anytime with questions or comments about an issue they might have.

Response to Lauren Teufel:
I think with anything that communication is a key component. It opens up doorways you wouldn't otherwise be able to step through. Communication paves the way for receiving information, relaying information and knowledge in general. I like your answer about basic needs. It was well thought out and explains more then just one basic need. It explains the role from point a to point b.

Lauren Teufel

Response to Colene Tessier:
A family in need can very well depend on the school for basic needs if they do not have the resources to obtain them on there own, I loved that you pointed that out. I also agree that communication is key when trying to build a relationship with the teacher.

1) What role of families’ do basic needs play in their overall quality of life?
Basic needs play an enormous part is a families overall quality of life. Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs I believe best demonstrates this. At the bottom of the pyramid are the important and primary needs such as food, water, and breathing. These qualities are essential in living. One step up in the pyramid is the concern for safety which can include employment, family, and health. All which are pretty crucial but can survive to a point without. All the way at the top of the pyramid is the idea of self-actualization which is someone realizing their full potential. Without starting at the bottom of the pyramid, you can not move on to the next level.

2) How can systems and professionals within systems build families’ trust?
In order to have trust, communication is vital. Parents can establish a relationship with the teacher and always feel like they are getting the best help possible. With an open line of communication, trust normally follows.
